Evolution 1.4.5 Print Issue in Gentoo

After updating my entire system, I’m continuing to see evolution segfault whenever I attempt to print.  I think my next try might be to re-emerge libgnomeprint, libgnomeprintui and evolution.  At this point, anything is worth trying.  Off to the forums to see if anyone else has seen this.

Superbowl Sunday!

The day has finally come.  The WORLD CHANGING EVENT that will shape everyones future.

<yea right>

Sorry.  It’s not really my sport.  Despite that fact, some how I always get convinced to go to someone’s house to watch the game surround by food that I probably shouldn’t be eating.  I’d rather be watching the Colorado Avalanche play.  I guess my main problem with watching football is the action stops way too often.  I’d rather watch a game where the action continues for more than just a few seconds at a time.  That’s OK though, because I do get to see all the new commercials and then I can go back to working on my Linux server.

Bit5Blog: Duplicate Posts and Weird Errors

Just be aware, that right now I keep ending up with duplicate posts because of problems with Bit5Blog.  The odd part, is that Bit5Blog reports an error like “Connection Refused”, yet I end up with two posts.

Note to self: report bug.

GCC+GLIBC Issues Once Again

You would think I would learn.

I have found through my experience with Gentoo that running emerge -u world is not as straight forward as they want you to think.  I have once again ran into issues where programs suddenly become unstable after such an update.  Nautilus dies quite regularly, and I can reproducibly kill it by mounting my cdrom via the desktop icon.   Unfortunately I’m not that strong of a software developer to be able to completely interpret the stack-trace.

It seems like re-emerging glib, gnome-vfs, and nautilus seems to correct the issue.

My complaint, and recommendation, is that there needs to be greater testing of an ebuild before it’s distributed through the stable portage tree.  In comparison to other binary distributions, I don’t expect I would have ever seen these kinds of issues with their stable package repositories.  Fortunately I’ve grown to enjoy the challenge of determining what is wrong.  Unfortunately with the lack of processing power on my desktop, this results in a lot of delays while packages compile.

Portage is like Swiss-Cheese

Every now and then I run into a software project mentioned somewhere such as freshmeat.net, or the Linux Journal that I want to give a try and find that it’s no where to be found in the portage tree.  One specific example is a project called GnoCHM, a CHM reader built using GTK2.   The problem I’ve run into, which I’ve seen more than once with portage and Gentoo, is the Python module used to read the CHM files is also not available in the portage tree.

That all being said, the only grip I have about Gentoo, and the portage tree, is it seems like the portage tree is a little more sparse than one would expect.  I’m not complaining too much, because all of the libraries and headers are available for me to build the application manually.

Alliant TechSystems Inc. Acquires Mission Research Corporation

Well it’s official.  The company that I work for, Mission Research Corporation, is being acquired by ATK (Alliant Techsystems Inc.).  Many of the guys at work have been through acquisitions with companies that they have previously worked with, but I’m concerned none the less because I’ve never experienced such a transition.  Unfortunately now it’s nothing more than a waiting game, but my stomach turns thinking about loosing such a wonderful job working with such a great group of people.

KDE Emerge Problems Continued

Even thought I followed the emerge gcc suggestion that the gentoo forums mention but I still am having issues with updating arts-1.1.5.

configure: error: "no known STL type found - did you forget to install libstdc++-devel ?"
died running ./configure, kde_src_compile:configure
*
* Your KDE program installation died while running the configure script
*
*
* If the error was related to not finding the STL, you have a gcc error
* that is easily fixed by re-emerging the latest version of gcc
* See Gentoo Forums Topic ID #790048
* or Gentoo Bug #38634
*

!!! ERROR: kde-base/arts-1.1.5 failed.
!!! Function configure_die, Line 170, Exitcode 0
!!! (no error message)

Later after I get back home I will follow the direction of those two sites as I am about to head to work and don’t have time to goof with it right now. Note also that my emerge -uD gnome && revdep-rebuild ran successfully though… and I’m now running gnome 2.4.1!!

Gentoo Linux Updates

Well, tonight I’ve started my updates on my laptop but have run into a couple of issues to note.  emerge -puD gnome introduced a new dependency on madplay. The emerge of madplay failed twice due to ldconfig errors, which resulted in the re-emerging of libid3tag and libmad. I “think” this might be due to the fact that I have done a few things that have caused other people issues. I have read the most recent version of glibc has caused emerge issues with KDE and has previously required a re-emerge of gcc. I’ve performed the full rebuild of gcc and glibc, as recommended by forums posts that I’ve come across. Additionally I have updated to python 2.3.3 and successfully ran the python-updater script from Gentoo. Everything seem to be going very smoothly now but I’m waiting for a blowup because this system has been seriously modified to reach this point.

Other notes: I have successfully patched the 2.6.0 kernel with the Orinoco monitor patch, and my ability to perform wireless scans seems to be working perfectly.

Gnome vs. KDE

First, a Linux recap: Over the past year I have used Linux heavily at work and at home.  With the help of OpenOffice and Win4Lin (for Visio) I have become a Linux convert for almost everything, with the exception of games & video editing.

My distribution of choice, at the moment, is Gentoo.  I’ve been through the entire gambit (e.g., Redhat, S.u.S.E, Debian, and Caldera).  I’ve come to really enjoy how you can tune Gentoo towards your needs.

Currently I’m in the trying to use Gnome as my desktop environment,  because I’ve gotten a little tired of the my recent stability problems KDE.   It just seems like KDE is constantly to easy to break, whether it’s a font configuration it doesn’t like or its poor performance.  I don’t think I’m ready for something as lightweight as XFCE4 yet, due to the fact that I’m not really a command line person.  I use GUI’s and GUI’s are my friend.

My primary computers include an Acer TravelMate 630 (work) and a Dell Inspiron 8000 (personal).  That being said, I do plan on posting my experiences associated with my usage of Linux on those two machines.

It Begins!

Today officially marks the beginning of my blog.  What you will find here is random stuff that I find interesting, issues that I’m concerned with, and the occasional rant.  So I hope you enjoy it.

I would also like to put in a big thanks to Bit5Blog for their wonderful blog system.

I also wanna just say to everyone please have some patience as this may be kind of boring at first as I figure out how I want to write on this thing.

EDIT: Here are a few examples of the CSS theme (plus they are a little useful for me to test my theme changes).
