Where’s My $10 Bucks

Well, had I bet $10 bucks with someone about the Adelphia installation… I would have won. The only actual programming required was to set where I was located to get the correct weather, and oh that looked so incredibly difficult. Infact that one part the totally infuriates me is that a “Profressional Installer” drops the box on the floor as he walks in, obviously not realizing that there is a hard drive with moving parts inside. But we all must remember is that they are “Trained Professionals”. Thanks for the total waste of my time Adelphia…

More Kissing (Camels that is…)

This morning I produced a few more shots of the Kissing Camels, this time during a beautiful Colorado sunrise. Unfortunately I’m not has happy with these shots as some in the past, so I may be experimenting in the near future to correct some of things that I have issues with (such as the huge contrast of exposure/brightness between the mountains and the kissing camels). Beyond this small detail I think they are still very beautiful with the incredible sunrise beaming against the camels…

If anyone does have suggestions on how to correct what bothers me here let me know. Unfortunately I don’t have a whole lot of professional training so many of the shots are simply pure luck with the camera, and only based on an image that I see in my mind…

All Customers are Idiots

While I realize that I’m may be an exception to the “learning curve” to electronics of any form, I find it quite frustrating and insulting that companies make the automatic assumption that your incapable of nothing more than pressing the play button. Adelphia Communications, within the past 2 or 3 months, started offering DVR (digital video recorder). It simply works as a replacement to your current cable box, increasing the the box rental by around $4, and then the service (which sits at about $5)… Don’t quote me on any of those prices, as all I remember was it was going to make about a $9 increase to my bill.

Either way, when I spoke with them they said to simply run by the local office and swap out the box. Since I had a doctors appointment I figured I would stop by afterwards since I was right next to the office. When I finally sit down with a person, and ask about grabbing the box they said that simply swapping wasn’t even an option as they needed a “Professional Installer” to put it in. Now I don’t know about you but I have taken a look at manuals and specs on other boxes (like TiVo), and have found that it’s connected in the exact same manner as our current box is. Soooo, what is it… that makes this installation so difficult that I have to have someone come to my house to do it? They told me at the time that the $25 installation fee was going to be waved, but I told them that there never will be an installation fee as long as they were going to send someone out to do something as stupid as plug the box in. How many hours of “training” did this person have to take to plugin a coax cable? I digress… there might be the possibility that he would need to show how it works, but that would be the point that I say RTFM.

What is more fustrating is the reason companies have reached this assumption towards all users. It’s due to all the idiots out there who do think that they know what they are doing, install it incorrectly, and then call up Adelphia expecting them to “fix it”. So at some point I can see why companies would be forced into this mind set… BUT if you have a user who is totally willing to accept the responsibility behind it being correctly installed, then why not let them. Regardless, I couldn’t get the service without the “Professional Installation” which is scheduled for 3-5 tomarrow.

So does anyone have bets as to whether it’s as easy as I’m saying it is?

Still Finding IE Bugs

As it goes with anyone trying to create a site that views properly across all web browsers, I have ran into a few more bugs with IE which appear to be corrected now. I’m not totally happy with it because there are a few places where text gets bunched together (say if you select this actual blog entry and then look at the title with the “previous entry” or “next entry” options above the title – in IE the title and this text is very close to eachother). Of course every other browser out there view this exactly the same as the other… except IE. I really wonder how many people realize that trying to create uniform sites such as this is like pulling teeth when it comes to trying to get it to work with IE. Then again I could always give up and just stop trying to fix it for all you who just mindlessly bow to the borg, I mean Microsoft….

Nesting

Well, this weekend marks the official begin of the “Nesting” phase of the pregnancy. Lena and I worked our tails of getting the house cleaned up and even got to all kinds of “hanging up” projects that have been sitting on the to-do list. The part that I’m seriously amazed about is the work Jonny is doing on the Fairy & Dragon painting were having done on the wall in the baby’s room. I guess I should get everyone caught up a little bit first here… We have decided that imagination is one of the key things that we want to focus on when raising our child. As Einstein even said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge…” (Albert Einstein : 1879 – 1955), and I whole heartedly believe that. So, the theme that we decided to go with is a fantastic creatures and places. Fortunately this is a theme that we can keep very uni-sex, since we still choose not to know what the baby is going to be until it’s born. The major “center-piece” of the theme is an Amy Brown painting, of which I cannot remember the name, with a Fairy on a ledge looking at a Dragon (that looks somewhat like a cloud). Lena’s always told me how good he was at painting, but they’ve never really pointed out many finished products for me to look at… anyways things are definitely coming together, and hopefully we’ll be all done by the time the little munchkin comes home :-)

Betas: You’d Think I Would Learn

This last week I attempted the slightly daring installation of KDE 3.4.0 Beta 2. Everything compiled ok and on the initial run through it appeared as if everything was running fine. On the first note I’m impressed by some of the changes they are making, and cannot wait until a stable release comes our way. The catch to my little attempt is the “stable” part. As I actually tried to do my work I started seeing quite a few lock ups followed by lossing all of my KDE settings (all of the .kde* directories was gone) after forcing a /etc/init.d/xdm restart during a runaway process that had taken over the machine. Fortunately a simple emerge unemerge corrected all the other issues related to apps trying to link against KDE 3.4.0… I did run into one disconcerting problem with OpenOffice Ximian Edition and the KDE File (Save/Open) Widget (since it was opened as a seperate process it didn’t kill open office, but the widget would crash and I couldn’t ever save my file). Either way, I’m back to normal but I definately warn the weak of heart to shy away from KDE 3.4.0 (at least until the release candidates!).

Still Tweaking

Well, you may still notice a few minor changes as I am tweaking the WordPress themes a little more.  One powerful new feature that I found in 1.5 is the “Pages” capability.  This is simply an ability to create entries that sit outside of the context / timeframe of the actual blog entries.  So webpage content that I had been previously treating as ‘static’ pages, can now be managed from within my blog and can be access via the menu system.  Depending on ho well this works, I may move WordPress into being the core control of my entire website.  If I do end up doing that, I may even go ahead and remove ‘/wordpress/’ from my URL structure.

Thankfully, I’m only a few steps away from finalizing my changes, so maybe I’ll actually talk about stuff other than changes I’m making ;-) .

… And Then The People Rejoiced …

Well, it appears as if I am done with the upgrades to WordPress and to my website.  I’m sure I may tweak a few little things while I’m at it.  I’m thinking the navigation bar at the top may be my next target.  I do have to say that the theming system within WordPress 1.5 has definitely made my life a whole lot easier.  Following tricks from other 1.5 testers I simply tweaked it to how I wanted, and then made use of the actual output from the “Single” page as a template for the rest of the web site.  Of course I couldn’t just sit there an let it be.  I then tied everything together with…

I can’t give it all away.  Next thing you know everyone’s website will look as cool as mine. :-)

Anyways, I really do hope that everyone likes it.  If you do have feelings one way or the other, definately let me know.  Also let me know on how you feel about requiring people to be registered in order to comment.  Since there’s not much love for comments going on [Cough, Lena, Cough], it might not make a big difference anyways.  Hehehe…

Blog Upgrades

Very shortly, pending the anticipated release of Word Press 1.5, I will be conducting some major updates to the web site.  Additionally, I’m in the process of trying to develop my own custom theme, which will be based on the new WordPress 1.5 default theme - Kubrick.

Spell Check

Ok, someone could have told me I had “Scenery” misspelled on my gallery all this time… How long as this page been sitting here? Almost 1 1/2 years? :-)
