Today I just release Fortune Widget 0.4, which includes corrections for WordPress 2.2.x and newer (I know… I know… a little behind the curve here). Additionally I’ve added some better error output to indicate why a fortune file read may have failed such as whether the fortune.php script is readable or if it’s the fortune file itself that the plugin cannot find.
** Note: For those who have the previous fortune widget installed, the fortune path has changed from [wordpress]/wp-content/plugins/widgets/fortune to [wordpress]/wp-content/plugins/fortune. Additionally the archive has been re-structured so that they work correctly “out of the box” when uncompressed in the wp-content/plugins directory.
I am hoping in the near future to get this in the official update system so that after version 0.4 you will be able to use the wordpress plugin update system for this plugin. Keep posted!
Additionally, I have an official Fortune Widget project page [applause], which will always list the latest available version.
Requirements
- WordPress 2.2.x or Newer

It’s good to see a variety of plugins available, especially with quotes, since quotes can be quite difficult to come by if you don’t already run a unix/linux system or have the technical know how to create quotes. The only downfall that I would raise about off-loaded storage, or any kind, the performance hit when the WordPress has to contact other websites / offsite servers to derive a given page. It might be worth while to recommend a page caching plugin in conjunction with wordpress-fortune-plugin…
