QOTD: Software Development Experts

If I’ve learned anything in my career, it is that approaching software development as an expert, as someone who has already discovered everything there is to know about a given topic, is the one surest way to fail.  – Jeff Atwood while answering criticism of his blog

This quote for some reason really strikes a cord with me.  When I made the decision to forgo vocal/orchestral music or photography as the primary focus of my college education, it came with the understanding that selecting software engineering or information technology would come at the price of continual learning.  Because of that decision, I know that I will be forever learning new aspects of my field until the day I retire, and any failure to do so will result in failure of some sort.  The instructor from my Software Engineering class at Colorado Technical University, who had definitely made this realization, had a fairly great saying that followed along the same lines (extremely paraphrased):

Knowledge of software engineering, or computing in general, is like the Grand Canyon.  You may, as a student, know this pile of rocks in the corner.  I may know this specific cave, and all the rocks it contains.  One may even have a map to show the overall layout of the canyon,  but to intimately know, and identify every single rock and crevice in the canyon is an absolute impossibility.  So accept this impossibility, and look towards the excitement of the new things you can discover every day.

Hey, thanks for the tip about Sabre, I’ve had a constant flow of Russian-domain users and while I’m not seeing spam comments from them (I use Captcha on comments) I assume they are up to no good. I doubt that number of people in .RU are interested in stand up paddle surfing or hanging out in Maui.

I love the quote. I’m 61 and still playing around with software and the web. I learn new things every day and whine about how little I know. The canyon keeps growing, and of course it’s growth is accelerating. But that’s just fine.

Here’s something you might find entertaining, my company recently did this landing page for Intel’s Software Partner Program, something a bit different from the norm. http://www.mysoftwarefilm.com/ . For some reason most people who try this think it’s great, and the rest think it sucks. Nobody in between. I have no idea why it’s so polarizing.

    Great quote that applies:
