When Nintendo released the Wii, they included a online store called the “Shopping Channel”. In this shopping channel there is a section called Virtual Console, where a player can download previously released games for NES, SNES, N64, as well as Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16/CD, and Neo Geo gaming systems. When I was first exposed to this feature, I heard the sucking sound of money flowing from players (and parents) wallets. Admittedly, I was also was tempted by the nostalgic power of Virtual Console and ended up purchasing some of the staple games of my time: Super Mario [Insert Subtitle Here], Punch Out, and Zelda. I once again found myself playing for quite some time through Punch Out, as I once did at my friends house so many years ago. There is however one disadvantage to this Virtual Console in that it doesn’t have a very large selection yet, and the addition of games has been quite slow. Either way, I’ve put together a short list of my favorite console games that I would like to see re-released:
Final Fantasy III
I consider this to be one of the greatest of the Final Fantasy franchise. I remember spending hundreds of hours playing this game and trying to find every single extra available. I this I did eventually max out all of my characters hit-points and I was able to kill Kefka at the end with one hit. In fact, I believe I still have the cartridge for this one. I would be extatic if this game was re-released, however it doesn’t sound like that will happen any time soon.
Chrono Trigger
This RPG was release from Square Soft at around the same time as FFIII. I liked the different battle system, compared to that of the Final Fantasy series, and I found the plot entertaining enough. Unfortunately, I don’t think I ever finished this because I only played it via rental (you could accomplish a lot when you had a shop around the corner that would rent games for 2 days at $1). Chrono Trigger, as with Final Fantasy, probably won’t be available for Virtual Console any time soon, unless Square Enix changes their stance on the release platform.
Flashback
This game had similar animation and game-play as Prince of Persia, however it was placed in a dark vision of the future. I don’t recall much of the plot, however I do remember spending many hours playing and replaying this one. I really don’t know if this one will ever see the light of day, since Delphine Software International went bankrupt while working on the third installment of this series.
Uniracers
Uniraces was goofy little game where you raced unicycles, while trying to perform extravagant tricks at the same time to gain extra points. I don’t remember spending an inordinate amount of time with this game , but it was always fun to go head to head against my brother. Being that this game was published by Nintendo America, I would think that you would eventually see this one in Virtual Console.
While this short list of games does not include every single title I would ever like to see re-released, these definitely make up my favorites that I would like to see sooner than later. Hopefully that sucking sound (remember the parents) will convince everyone involved to keep the releases going.
Now, the only question have is: what other games would you like to see released?
