Watch what you Google

Of course it was just a matter of time before such a thing occurred, but News.com just had post about the government requesting search records from Google. Many of you who watch tech news have probably already heard about this, and I know many have already put in their two cents on this one. However, I think the larger issue here is another situation in which the government is trying to overstep their bounds when it comes to your personal privacy. I also definately feel that Google needs a huge kudos for rejecting the government’s request. While I realize the issue at hand, child pornography, is a serious one, I also feel that it could set precident in future cases with subjects not quite so serious. Especially when every other major search engine has, in these cases given such information over to the government freely. So that’s when I definately say be very careful what you search for, as you never know when the government will get to see exactly what your doing. Again, kudos to Google…

Update 1/19/2006:  As I expected, the news this morning – WFAA Channel 8 Dallas – had a quick blurb about this court order that came from the government.  While it was short, they did succesfully make it sound like Google is being the bad guys, while Yahoo! is the good! guys! because of the subject matter.  Again, I agree that this subject matter is a serious issue, however where does it stop?  What happens when the government says that search data information for [insert use here]?
