Ubuntu & Kubuntu 5.10

Well, it’s been a while since I’ve really ever mentioned the release of a distro, but I think in this case I need to make an acception. The Ubuntu/Kubuntu releases have finally convinced me to at least make a single step away from Gentoo as my desktop distro. While I’m not saying I’m totally walking away from Gentoo, Kubuntu has definately become my distro of choice for my laptop. For all you Gentoo-ites and Debian-ites out there, here’s my reasoning:

First, one of the most recent problems that I’ve been having with my laptop lately is the lack of memory. While many would say that the easiest way to deal with this in the Linux world would be to strip down to a light weight desktop manager, such as fluxbox, or englightenment, allowing more space for my desktop apps. While this is a very logical answer, the real issue of this lack of memory is the extensive compile times required on an almost daily basis to keep the system up to date. I tried a few hacks at update scripts that would run every weekend or so, but even then that could render my laptop useless for a few hours, usually during the time I need it the most. So I’ve trade a SLIGHTLY updated system with customizability that I’m not really using any more for an increase in simplicity and easier updating (easier from my laptops standpoint). Either way I’m giving it a serious chance this time, and we’ll see if this continues as well as it’s started…
